The Temple City High Twelve Club hosted the Temple City Unified School District’s 17th Annual Public Schools Recognition Night on April 19, 2010 at Longden Elementary School’s Memoli Hall.
Memoli Hall was “standing room only” as over 200 family members, friends, teachers, and community members celebrated 44 students receiving awards recognizing their service, character, and self-improvement.
TCUSD’s District Teacher of the Year, Patricia Wenzel, was the evening’s motivational speaker. Mrs. Wenzel posthumously saluted John Zubrick for initiating TCUSD’s Public Schools Recognition Program 17 years ago. She encouraged students to model Mr. Zubrick’s life style, giving back to the community, continuing good works and taking advantage of opportunities. Mr. Zubrick passed away on March 22, 2010; he was 91 years, 3 months, and 15 days young.
The Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of California founded Public Schools Month in 1920 to celebrate the contribution of public schools to the American way of life. In light of the fundamental service public schools have provided over the years in helping millions of young Americans find success, it is fitting that this year’s theme for Public Schools Month is “Public Schools -The Foundation of Our Democracy.” The Temple City High Twelve Club hosted the Temple City Unified School District’s 17th Annual Public Schools Recognition Night on April 19, 2010 at Longden Elementary School’s Memoli Hall.

Cloverly students collected over 1,031 food and household items for Ronald McDonald House from April 12 to April 16. Fourth grade students donated
230 items; sixth graders, 338 items, and fifth graders won the class competition by collecting 463 items. Students eagerly watched the tally board to see which grade level had collected the most items because the grade level with the most items would win a party. Students received a special purple “brag tag” for each donated item. A representative from Ronald McDonald House will attend Cloverly’s Spirit Rally on
April 28 to acknowledge the donations and also draw one student’s name from each classroom to enjoy a special lunch with the Principal.
The Cloverly community contributed generously to this event as they have for other charity drives this year, including Haiti Relief and Holiday Charity Drive.
The Ronald McDonald event is sponsored by Cloverly Elementary School and the Temple City Kiwanis Club. Denise Galvan, fourth grade teacher, Marilyn Nassif, fifth grade teacher, and Rich Wenzel, retired teacher and Kiwanis representative, worked tirelessly to promote the event and to deliver the goods to Ronald McDonald House. Ms. Galvan and Mrs. Nassif worked with students to design collection boxes and to collect and count items from each classroom daily.

Over 30 fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students participated in Cloverly Elementary School’s annual Geography Bee on Tuesday, January 12.

The competition lasted for over 90 minutes as students completed seven grueling rounds of questions. About half a dozen students were left for the nerve-wracking tie breaking rounds.

Two fourth graders, Andrew Kosanovich and Carol Anne Werthwein, nabbed first and second place, respectively. It was almost a fourth grade sweep; but as it went down to a tense final tie breaker, it was fifth grader Sophia Wu who took third place.

Congratulations to teacher Denise Galvan for arranging, emceeing, and coordinating practice sessions for another successful Geography Bee at Cloverly.

Cloverly Elementary School is in the Temple City Unified School District and serves students in grades 4-6.

TCUSD Superintendent Chelsea Kang-Smith presented Principal Kathy Perini with an Honor Roll Banner from California Business for Education Excellence.

“I’m very pleased to accept this award on behalf of Emperor’s students, parents, and staff,” announced Principal Perini. “Emperor’s students, parents, and staff work together as a cohesive team to raise student achievement.”

“Emperor students and staff affirm that great success is happening in our District,” commented Dr. Kang-Smith. “This is a testament to their hard work and relentless focus on student achievement.”

Emperor is one of 1,304 California public elementary, middle and high schools that are recognized by the business community for having consistent high student academic achievement and making significant progress toward closing the achievement gap. The Honor Roll focuses on achievement data over time and validates teachers’ hard work.

Using data, CBEE identifies and honors the highest performing public schools in California. These schools are being recognized not only for their achievements but so other schools can learn the successful strategies or “best practices” of these Honor Roll schools.

No other school recognition program in California uses hard data, individual school and student subgroup performance data based on the California Standards Tests, and the California High School Exit Exam to evaluate school academic performance.

Emperor Elementary is one of seven schools in the Temple City Unified School District and serves students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

Students were allowed to bring one item from home and other basic supplies were provided in class. They were asked to prepare three dishes to serve to guest judges.

Judges were easy to find. Assistant Principals Chris Sewell and Terry Sholty signed up two months in advance. Teams were judged on creativity, presentation, taste and clean up.

Some of past year’s dishes included crepes with strawberries and chocolate sauce, garden salad with poppy seed dressing, and carne asada burritos.
